Common Mode Chokes
A common mode choke is an electrical filter that blocks high-frequency noise shared by two or more data or power lines while allowing desired low-frequency or DC signals to pass through. Common mode chokes suppress electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radiofrequency current (RFI) from a power supply. EMI and RFI interference pose serious problems for electronic equipment, especially with a power-line communication system. Common mode noise often comes from sources like unshielded electronics, motors, or radio signals. Without proper filtering, this noise can cause interference in electronic circuits. Common mode chokes work by using inductance to block these high frequencies while allowing low-frequency currents to flow.
These components are widely used in power supply circuits to reduce interference across various electronic devices. Modern electronics often require multiple power conversion circuits, and ensuring that these circuits don’t interfere with each other is crucial. Regulations like FCC Part 15 and CISPR exist to minimize interference, and even with careful design, additional filtering is often necessary. This is where passive filters—comprising inductors and capacitors—come into play, often installed near noise sources such as power connections.
Selecting a common mode choke involves considering the required impedance (noise attenuation), frequency range (the noise bandwidth), and current-handling capabilities. It’s essential to differentiate between common mode and differential mode noise. A common mode choke typically has two or more windings on a shared core to block high-frequency noise while allowing low-frequency signals to pass. By contrast, a single choke has just one winding, primarily for differential mode suppression.
Various types of common mode chokes are available, including:
- High-Speed Data Line Chokes – Used in interfaces like USB and HDMI to maintain signal integrity while reducing common mode noise.
- Surface Mount Data Line Chokes – Attenuate noise in data lines up to 100 MHz.
- Data/Power Line Chokes – Used in both data and power applications to reduce common and differential mode noise.
- Surface Mount Power Line Chokes – Eliminate common mode noise in power lines with varying current capacities.
- Through-Hole Power Line Chokes – Designed for high efficiency in filtering AC line noise.
- Toroid Style Chokes – Provide high common mode impedance across a broad frequency range and are ideal for switch-mode power supplies.
In summary, common mode chokes play a vital role in managing noise in electronic circuits, ensuring that devices can operate without interference while meeting regulatory standards.
