Standard Linear Regulators
Standard Linear Regulator ICs are integrated circuits used to provide a stable and regulated output voltage from a higher or varying input voltage. They maintain a constant voltage by dissipating excess energy as heat.
- Purpose: Provide a steady DC voltage to electronic circuits.
- Function: Reduce and regulate input voltage to a fixed or adjustable output.
- Common types: 7805 (5 V), 7812 (12 V), 7905 (-5 V), and LM317 (adjustable).
- Applications: Power supplies, microcontrollers, sensors, audio circuits, and embedded systems.
- Advantages: Simple design, low noise, and reliable voltage regulation.
- Limitation: Generally less efficient than switching regulators because excess voltage is converted into heat.
In simple terms, linear regulator ICs keep the output voltage stable and suitable for powering electronic components.
